In the last few weeks my fabric stash I’ve purchased an enormous amount of fabric. Although my brother was kind enough to remind me that you should only collect enough manna to last a day or else it will rot. That’s a brother for ya. Some of the things I’m most excited about is yardage of Alexander Henry’s All Cotton in Pumpkin, a fat quarter of the VW vans in blue from Heather Ross’ Lightning Bugs, and almost a full yard from Heather Bailey’s Pop Garden that I found on the scrap table at The Fabric Shack for only $3. Plus I finally found the tree print that I’ve seen all over the internet at Joann’s today. I also have some eBay finds coming, which include some Flea Market Fancy and Amy Butler’s Ginger Bliss. Not to mention my fat quarters from the swap…perhaps it’s time I stop writing about and buying fabric and start using it.
Stash Building…It’s Lovely
So it’s no joke that I love Flea Market Fancy. Unfortunately it’s about as easy to find as a needle in a haystack. Espcially the polka dots! I’m big on dots too. So when I read on a blog that Sugar Pine Quilt Shop in Grass Valley, CA had some and was willing to take phone orders I was super excited. I picked up some yardage of the Brown Dots and the Pink Vines. I would’ve bought more, but there’s that whole budget thing….CURSES!
For Mother’s Day my husband did just as I requested and purchased the entire set of Katie Jump Rope fat quarters. Elise is only 10 months old, so it was up to daddy to pull through and make sure she got me something lovely. I can’t wait to make a quilt out of this fabric!
Also, Fabric Hound had an awesome sale and I picked up a couple of yards of Valori Wells Urban Flannel with the animals (I wanted the bird too, but that budget thing again…I had to choose..I hate choosing!) and then the Alice in Wonderland print from Kokka.
I also snagged a fat quarter of the green dots from the Flea Market Fancy line and the Goldfish print from Lightning Bugs from Etsy.
Now if I could just get my hands on some of the Flea Market Fancy aqua posies….yardage..anyone? Anyone?!
A Stash Building Frenzy!!
I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of money recently on fabric. I’m serious, it’s become insane. There will probably be a marital dispute here in the near future. It’s all been worth it though, as I have been picking up some things that I really want.
From Jo-ann’s I picked up a very pretty embroidered yellow linen and this super cute juvenile print with strawberries and hearts. I plan on using the yellow linen for the Barcelona skirt pattern and the juvenile print for a cute, smocked top for Elise.
Recently, BeeBeeMod was giving away a free scrap bag with the purchase of an Oliver + S pattern. I picked up the Sunday Brunch Jacket & A-line skirt pattern because I was so inspired by this jacket, and enjoyed my scrap bag. There were some really excellent sized scraps and much sought after prints, like a couple of good sized Flea Market Fancy prints and quite a bit of good sized Amy Butler scraps. When I say scraps, some of these were about the size of a fat eighth. Best part was it was free!
The Fabric Shack continues to be my weak spot. Elise enjoys touching all the bolts of brightly colored fabric, and the old ladies enjoy touching Elise! Let’s see, last month I picked up this Dobby Dot by Moda. I think it will make a great dress for Elise.
I also dug through the scrap tables, which if you have the time and patience (or should I say, if Elise has the time and patience) you can find some pretty large sized scraps. I found a red flower print, a pink flower print and a polka dot print which all can be used for Elise sized clothes. I love that she can have clothes made out of less than a yard of fabric.
Finally, since I’ve recently decided I want to start quilting, I decided to root around through the fat quarter bins. The Uptown Daisy Days was probably my best find, even though I still can’t find it in the orange that I so dearly love. I should’ve bought that when I had the chance. Live and learn. However, the black toile print I found on the scrap table almost makes up for it.

Fabric.com is having their gamblers sale and the Michael Miller toile panel that I’ve had my eye on for about a month. I got it at an excellent price, and I do love toile. I had debated waiting a week to buy this, but I’m glad I pulled the trigger, as it’s no longer on sale.

Finally, I went on a Heather Ross spree. I went after what I could get of this stuff like a crack addict! It’s been bad. While I refuse to pay the outrageous prices for the VW buses or the gnomes, I was willing to pay for two packs of 48 4″ squares of the Lightning Bugs & Other Mysteries print from Quilt Play’s etsy shop. This will become a twin sized quilt when I get the courage to use it.
Finally, between Pink Chalk Fabrics and Fabricpalooza’s Etsy Shop (which is Karen Gray Design, check out her website! She just opened a fabric shop), I was able to snag yardage on the Nesting Dolls from Heather’s Westhill line, as well as some pink strips from Lightning Bugs that I will use as quilt binding on the aforementioned Lightning Bugs quilt.

I have some Flea Market Fancy on the way, and I already have my next lines to stock up on picked out. Denyse Schmidt’s Katie Jump Rope and Heather Bailey’s Freshcut. I have loved both of these lines since they came out, but for some reason haven’t stocked up on any yardage. Perhaps I like to wait until it’s hard to find, you know, the thrill of the catch.
A Martha-Like Rant
It’s no secret that I’ve developed a love for fabric and sewing. My favorites are Amy Butler’s Lotus line, anything by Denyse Schmidt and Heather Ross Lightning Bugs and Westhill lines. Here’s what I’m NOT a fan of: fabric price gouging. It’s become a common, yet annoying practice, for people on Etsy or Ebay to list their fabrics at outrageous prices simply because these fabrics are hard to find. For example, Heather Ross’s Lightning Bugs line is discontinued and it was recently announced that due to a non-compete she’ll be taking a hiatus from fabric designing altogether for a few years. I saw 4 yards of her goldfish fabric on Ebay for $104. Seriously? Who is paying $104 for fabric. More examples, Denyse Schmidt’s Flea Market Fancy line which is almost impossible to find in yards, sells in fat quarters on Etsy for $9. An 18×22″ piece of fabric for $9? I just bought yardage for $9. If you want to inspire me to save handmade, don’t make a grab for my wallet please.
A moment to lament the cute things I can’t afford…….

Heather Ross uses a ton of Flea Market Fancy fabric in her book “Weekend Sewing”. It’s like salt in my fabric wound.

Maternity Skirts, Curtains and Baby Blankets
Since I’m taking the weekend off from the Weekender Bag, I’ll show you what I have been up to with my sewing machine. After wearing the same black skirt to church for the last 8 weeks I decided that my maternity wardrobe needed something new. Also, I find maternity shorts to be a foolish purchase considering that while I might be pregnant again someday, it might not be in the summer. Therefore, I’m not spending money on shorts I’m only going to wear for a couple of months. A couple of cute summer skirts will do the trick, and cost much less in the long run. Yesterday I was able to pick up some of the new Amy Butler Midwest Modern fabric for 1/2 price due to an anniversary sale at the Stitching Post. Mom told me a skirt out of polka dots would look terrible, but then admitted to me this morning at church that it looked a lot better than she imagined.
I promise, this hangs much better on me than it does the hanger. I would like to get this same pattern in the moss/martini colors and make curtains, but that’ll have to wait until I have $50 laying around to spend on fabric…..which will have to wait until I have a job….which has to wait until I pass my state boards and have this baby….yeah, it’s going to be a while.
Here are some baby projects I am working on, and hope to have completed before the baby is actually born! Again, I’m kind of a disaster and I firmly believe I’ll be finishing up the baby’s room while having my first contractions.
First, curtains. Curtains are kind of a priority to me right now because of where the crib sits in the room, it gets a lot of sunlight in the morning and I don’t want my child being blinded or baked because mommy didn’t care enough to at least re-hang the blinds she took down when she painted the room. I bought this fabric from Modern Basics, it’s rather expensive..but it is 110 inches wide, so you get a lot of fabric. Really, that’s my lame excuse for justifying spending that much on fabric. But it is REALLY cute.
See how cute that is?! I couldn’t possibly deny my child’s hippo nursery something this adorable. What I did deny my child’s nursery was the $270 hippo bedding that matches this fabric. Honestly, expensive crib bedding is another purchase I can’t justify. What’s the point? $270 for sheets your child will pee on? Gross.
Finally, a baby blanket. Perhaps this one won’t turn out as wonky as the last one. It’s Michael Miller Disco Dot – Citrus (which I had to hunt down on Ebay…and Ebay terrifies me, so if I’m shopping there I’m desperate) and some yellow minkee fabric I picked up locally. Truthfully, the minkee is so soft I would like to make myself a blanket and forget about the baby. Other people are going to buy me blankets anyways….
I love this fabric and it’s probably both a blessing and a shame that I didn’t discover it until after it had been discontinued. A blessing to my wallet but a shame to my fabric stash.
