A Stash Building Frenzy!!

I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of money recently on fabric. I’m serious, it’s become insane. There will probably be a marital dispute here in the near future. It’s all been worth it though, as I have been picking up some things that I really want.

From Jo-ann’s I picked up a very pretty embroidered yellow linen and this super cute juvenile print with strawberries and hearts. I plan on using the yellow linen for the Barcelona skirt pattern and the juvenile print for a cute, smocked top for Elise.

Recently, BeeBeeMod was giving away a free scrap bag with the purchase of an Oliver + S pattern. I picked up the Sunday Brunch Jacket & A-line skirt pattern because I was so inspired by this jacket, and enjoyed my scrap bag. There were some really excellent sized scraps and much sought after prints, like a couple of good sized Flea Market Fancy prints and quite a bit of good sized Amy Butler scraps. When I say scraps, some of these were about the size of a fat eighth. Best part was it was free!

The Fabric Shack continues to be my weak spot. Elise enjoys touching all the bolts of brightly colored fabric, and the old ladies enjoy touching Elise! Let’s see, last month I picked up this Dobby Dot by Moda. I think it will make a great dress for Elise.
I also dug through the scrap tables, which if you have the time and patience (or should I say, if Elise has the time and patience) you can find some pretty large sized scraps. I found a red flower print, a pink flower print and a polka dot print which all can be used for Elise sized clothes. I love that she can have clothes made out of less than a yard of fabric.
Finally, since I’ve recently decided I want to start quilting,  I decided to root around through the fat quarter bins. The Uptown Daisy Days was probably my best find, even though I still can’t find it in the orange that I so dearly love. I should’ve bought that when I had the chance. Live and learn. However, the black toile print I found on the scrap table almost makes up for it.

Fabric.com is having their gamblers sale and the Michael Miller toile panel that I’ve had my eye on for about a month. I got it at an excellent price, and I do love toile. I had debated waiting a week to buy this, but I’m glad I pulled the trigger, as it’s no longer on sale.

Finally, I went on a Heather Ross spree. I went after what I could get of this stuff like a crack addict! It’s been bad. While I refuse to pay the outrageous prices for the VW buses or the gnomes, I was willing to pay for two packs of 48 4″ squares of the Lightning Bugs & Other Mysteries print from Quilt Play’s etsy shop. This will become a twin sized quilt when I get the courage to use it.
Finally, between Pink Chalk Fabrics and Fabricpalooza’s Etsy Shop (which is Karen Gray Design, check out her website! She just opened a fabric shop), I was able to snag yardage on the Nesting Dolls from Heather’s Westhill line, as well as some pink strips from Lightning Bugs that I will use as quilt binding on the aforementioned Lightning Bugs quilt.

I have some Flea Market Fancy on the way, and I already have my next lines to stock up on picked out. Denyse Schmidt’s Katie Jump Rope and Heather Bailey’s Freshcut. I have loved both of these lines since they came out, but for some reason haven’t stocked up on any yardage. Perhaps I like to wait until it’s hard to find, you know, the thrill of the catch.

A Martha-Like Rant

It’s no secret that I’ve developed a love for fabric and sewing. My favorites are Amy Butler’s Lotus line, anything by Denyse Schmidt and Heather Ross Lightning Bugs and Westhill lines. Here’s what I’m NOT a fan of: fabric price gouging. It’s become a common, yet annoying practice, for people on Etsy or Ebay to list their fabrics at outrageous prices simply because these fabrics are hard to find. For example, Heather Ross’s Lightning Bugs line is discontinued and it was recently announced that due to a non-compete she’ll be taking a hiatus from fabric designing altogether for a few years. I saw 4 yards of her goldfish fabric on Ebay for $104. Seriously? Who is paying $104 for fabric. More examples, Denyse Schmidt’s Flea Market Fancy line which is almost impossible to find in yards, sells in fat quarters on Etsy for $9. An 18×22″ piece of fabric for $9? I just bought yardage for $9. If you want to inspire me to save handmade, don’t make a grab for my wallet please.

A moment to lament the cute things I can’t afford…….

Easy Nothing!

I started this shirt 4 months ago. I found it so completely obnoxious to make that I just now finished it. To be perfectly honest, it’s not really finished, but it’s as far as I’m willing to go with it. It’s the Easy Empire Waist Top from Amy’s Butler’s Little Stitches for Little Ones. For my fabrics I chose was Feathered Friends by Wendy Slotboom. I should’ve known this project was doomed from the start when I didn’t even really like the fabrics that I chose. I chose them because I couldn’t find anything else at The Fabric Shack that I thought coordinated well enough for this shirt.

So I come home and I cut out my fabrics and I’m all set to make an adorable shirt for my little girl. Ok, first the pattern difficulty is 4. This makes no sense because it is titled the EASY Empire Waist top, but I digress. I’ve heard this same thought echoed on other blogs as well, so I know I’m not alone in this thinking. It was all fun and games until I tried to add in the lining..and tried again..and then again..and then got tired of trying to make it look nice and went with bias tape to finish my edges instead. I don’t have time to be aggrevated. The rest of the shirt came together easily, but that lining issue was enough to sour me for the whole shirt. This is the first Amy Butler pattern I haven’t been able to finish in a couple of hours. I didn’t add the elastic, and there’s no button on this shirt but I don’t really intend to add these things (well, maybe a snap closure). Overall, I didn’t enjoy making this shirt. I can’t wait to start on some Oliver + S stuff for her summer wardrobe!

By the way, no one sleeve is not longer than the other, it’s just the way the shirt is hanging.

Why Is This News??

Ryan Widmer’s home is going under foreclosure. Really, it made the news. The guy is, for the moment, in prison for killing his wife. I’m pretty sure he’s got bigger problems than his house (without a bathtub, I might add). And while I’m on this Ryan Widmer subject, what kind of moron jurors go home and perform their own experiments? Nevermind my opinion on whether or not he’s guilty, let’s talk about simple kindergarten skills. As an experienced juror, I know that you can only choose to accept or disregard information provided as evidence in the courtroom. You are free to practice being Mr. Wizard on your own time, but you are not free to bring your Mr. Wizardry (yep, I said it) to the juror room. DUMB.
